Mrs. Moore's and Mrs. Campbell's Grading System

Virginia Beach Public Schools grading system is as follows: 94-100= A, 86-93= B, 78-85= C, 70- 77= D, and 69 and below=E. All grades will be assigned according to this scale. We will use an electronic grade book to record all grades and will provide progress reports as required by Virginia Beach School System. This program provides specific individual information of your child's grades as well as the class average on the individual assignments. All students with an active 504 plan or IEP will be graded according to the same scale with their specific modifications and accommodations in place.

Science, Social Studies, and Math Grades

Tests, quizzes, and graded class assignments are ways to measure the learning progress and will comprise part of the quarterly grades. Science and Social Studies tests will count twice while quizzes and class assignments will count once. Students will be provided with a study guide approximately one week prior to a Science or Social Studies unit test.

All graded math assignments will be assessed according to the Everyday Math curriculum and will be weighted according to the level of the skills taught. Third Grade will hold a math night which will specifically describe and explain the math grading system according to the math curriculum to all interested parents.

Science and Social Studies Projects

There will be four home projects throughout the course of the year (2 for science and 2 for social studies) and each will count as a test grade. Projects provide the opportunity for students to pursue topics of special interest in alignment with the unit topic. In class projects will be completed in class and are typically group projects. Home projects will be completed individually at home with parental guidance. Grades will be earned according to the project requirements and a grading rubric. Students will have an average of three weeks to complete most projects. Late projects will be assessed according to the rubric with a 5 point deduction per day off the earned grade. For example, if Johnny earned an 89 (B) and his project was one day late, his final grade would be a 84 (C). Each student will be provided with written directions, detailed explanation and samples in class, due dates, and the grading considerations on the rubric. If your child needs specific materials that you are unable to provide, please write us a note and we will be happy to help in any way possible.

Reading and Writing Grades

Reading grades consist of reading tests/quizzes, projects/presentations, and written and oral response to literature.

The writing grade consists of word study, editing, and writing. A word study and editing quiz will be given each Friday. The students will complete a graded writing assignment every other week. The first few weeks of school, Ms. Campbell will be assessing students for word study. There will not be word study homework until the groups have been established. Editing quizzes will begin the second week of school.

Reading Logs

Each week starting Friday, September 13th,, your child will be given a Brag Tag reading log to be completed at home. It is required that your child read a minimum of one hour per week. The reading logs need to be initialized by a parent and returned to school each Friday. Beginning in October, each child will be given a Brag Tag necklace and will earn beads for the hours they read at home. Failure to return a reading log each Friday will affect your child's reading grade.

Homework

Homework helps to reinforce, enrich, and extend learning. It develops positive study habits and responsibility. It also provides the parent with communications of daily assignments and lessons. Please be sure to sign the homework planner nightly and note any concerns/questions you may have encountered with your child. Language Arts/Word Study and Math homework will be assigned nightly (rarely will their be homework for math over the weekend). Most math home links are referenced in the student reference book which will remain in your child's backpack at all times. Each student is assigned one reference book which will be collected at the end of the year. If the book is lost, the parent will be responsible for a replacement fee.

Students will be accountable for their homework assignments. Although homework is not graded, failure to complete the assignment(s) will result in a loss of privileges.Your child will earn after-school detention if he/she fails to complete eight homework assignments per quarter.

Weekly completion of all assignments along with appropriate in class behavior will be rewarded with Freedom Friday privileges. Failure to complete homework will result in completing missed assignments during the Freedom Friday time with the appropriate teacher for that week. Your child's daily planner serves as the communication of behavior as well as completed homework. Assignments that are incomplete will be noted daily on your child's planner daily.

Signed Papers/Take Home Tuesday

We will send home graded papers every Tuesday. Please sign the cover sheet and return all of the papers by Friday of that same week. Please do not remove the graded papers from the cover sheet as we need the entire packet returned. You will receive all graded papers at the end of each nine weeks once grades, behavior, and work habits have been documented on the report card.

All PTA and other important papers will come home on Tuesday so please pay close attention to your child's take home folder.
